Young Men with Hats vs. Young Woman with Head Scarfs

I read an interesting Spanish article today on La Vanguardia.es, regarding the issue of hats and beenies in classes and public schools. In my old high school, for example, we couldn’t wear any article of clothing on your head. Nothing. Once in a while I would forget I had my hat on and the professors would remind me. In fact, they would sometimes get angry saying, “Take of the hat now! You know the rules!” I would obviously take my hat off. I never though anything about this social norm…. until now (albeit a little late, hehe. I graduate a from high school a while ago)

Anyway, onto the point of this blog post:

Why is it that young muslim girls are allowed to wear head scarfs in school but I couldn’t wear my cap?

Is it that religious norms are far more important that school rules? Even in a public school?

I feel like returning to my old school simply to tell my professor that I HAVE to wear my cap because my religion demands it. Perhaps im just instigating, but I get curious simply thinking about the responses that the teachers would give me.

Muchachos con Gorras vs. Muchachas con Velos

Hoy leí un artículo interesante en La Vanguardia.es, hablaba sobre el tema interesante de gorras y sombreros en clases y escuelas públicas. En mi preparatoria, por ejemplo, no podíamos llevar ningún objeto en la cabeza. Nada. De vez an cuando se me olvidaba quitarme mi gorrito y los profesores me recordaban las normas. De hecho hasta se enojaban diciendo, “¡Quítate la gorra ahora mismo! ¡Ya sabes las reglas!” Obviamente me la quitaba. Nunca pensé de nada sobre esta norma…hasta hoy. (aunque sea un poco tarde, jiji. Tengo tiempo que me gradué de la preparatoria)

Bueno, a mi punto de esta entrada:

¿Por qué las damas y muchachas musulmanes pueden ir a las clases con velos sobre sus cabezas pero yo no podía llevar mi gorrito?

¿Será por que las normas de religión son más importantes que las reglas de escuela? Aunque sea una escuela pública?

Tengo ganas de regresar a mi escuela para decirle a los profesores que tengo que tener mi gorrito puesto en todas las horas por que mi religion lo manda. Quizas simplemente estaré instigando, pero me da curiosidad al pensar lo que dirían los profesores.

Hmm, mejor lean el artículo y diganme lo que piensan….
